The CCVL
The Lagos Ciência Viva Science Centre (CCVL) is a private non-profit association that has been operating for fourteen years. It is part of the National Network of Ciência Viva Science Centres, which includes 21 centres and is governed by the Lagos City Hall, the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, and the University of the Algarve. The CCVL's main goal is to promote scientific and technological literacy to the general public by organizing events and outreach activities. The centre's permanent exhibition is dedicated to the History and Discoveries and uses the relationship between history and modern science to create outreach activities on all scientific disciplines.
Staff
The CCVL team comprises 14 full-time employees, including 3 PhDs, and several interns. The team is led by the Executive Director and supported by the coordination team, which is responsible for the organization and implementation of the centre's programmes and activities. The facilitators, who are multidisciplinary and versatile, are responsible for implementing the activities. The CCVL also has an administrator, a receptionist, and an audio-visual technician.
Location and activities
The CCVL is located in Lagos and serves the surrounding municipalities. It receives approximately 35,000 visitors per year, including foreign tourists during the summer. The CCVL offers activities in many areas for a diverse and wide public, including non-formal adult education, formal and informal school education, and outreach activities for seniors. The CCVL participates in various events, such as the European Research Night and dedicated conferences, and has an extracurricular Experimental Sciences school program for 500 students.
Internship and work routines
During the internship, the intern will join the team of facilitators and work from 9:30am to 6:30pm, with a lunch break from 1pm to 2pm. The facilitators have busy days, which may include visits to the museum and carrying out activities from the educational offer, preparing weekend activities with families, and science outreach activities in schools between 4 and 5pm. The interns will often meet the facilitators for coffee breaks and may have the opportunity to interact with the director and coordination team, who are available to answer any questions.
